There were more nominations, from more HR professionals and business leaders, from more organisations, and even from more countries. The result is a unique snapshot of the Singapore working community with a wide range of organisations from both private industry and the public sector represented.
Shalini Shukla, journalist and researcher with HRM, says the 2010 nomination period was far more active than in previous years, the event received nominations and recommendations from all over the world, with many multinationals keen to celebrate the HR achievements of their Singapore teams.
“We had nominations coming from as far as Germany,” she said. Even visiting experts offered HRM their opinions on worthy finalists. “(HR thought leader) Dave Ulrich generously emailed some recommendations.”
Importantly, the plethora of nominations means only the best of the best have been able to carry on to the important second round. “It means even more to be a finalist this year,” Shukla says, congratulating all of the leaders, HR professionals, teams and organisations who made it.
All HR, great and small
The plethora of nominations has created a strong mix of finalists, representing a complete cross-section of the Singapore economy. Big organisations and small; private companies, government institutions and non-profit organisations all figure in the lineup.
There are the large multinationals; from previous winners like Hewlett Packard (HP) to new and emerging Asian powerhouses such as Unilever and Yahoo. But there are also the smaller players, for whom last year’s recession and financial crisis represented a time to rely on their HR departments stepping up and becoming more strategic. Organisations such as KPK Quantity Surveyors and the Singapore Intellectual Property Office showed their HR could be matched against some of the best systems in the world.
Kim Sung Hae, HR Vice President for Asia-Pacific, HP, says the computer giant is immensely proud to be in the running for seven awards this year. They are confident of a strong showing, given the unique focus on HR strategy throughout the company.
“This is yet another formal recognition of our HR team’s contribution as a business enabler in HP,” she said. “HP is extremely proud to be an industry leader in HR practices and are hopeful to win in many of the categories we have been nominated for.”
Judging the winners
There is now plenty of work ahead for both the finalists and judges. Each participant has now subbmitted a detailed document outlining all of the evidence of their achievements in the appropriate award category. They were asked to provide real metrics and results to show the effects of their strategies.
HRM’s 18 esteemed judges are now spending most of this month going through the reports. Each will choose their top three finalists in each category, citing the main reasons behind their decisions. Allocating points to each judge’s Top Three contenders, the winning finalist is then calculated but kept secret until the Award is announced.
This takes place at a gala ceremony at Singapore’s Ritz Carlton Millenia ballroom on February 4.
