The Delhi Cabinet has approved minimum wage increases of 33% for unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers. The new wage structure will also pertain to clerical and non-technical staff.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the city now boasts the highest minimum wages in the country. “The new wages will ensure that the workers are paid ‘satisfactory wages’," she said.
“An unskilled labourer will now get 5272 (US$116) rupees per month whereas a semi-skilled labourer can take home at least 5850 rupees per month. A skilled labourer is now entitled to minimum wages of 6448 rupees per month,” a senior Delhi government official said.
The monthly wage of graduate clerical and non-technical staff is now 7020 rupees whereas for non-graduate staff, the pay is 6448 rupees per month.
The new wage structure, last revised in March 2008, is effective from 1st February 2010.
