The US Navy has been affirmed as an employer of choice. It was recently awarded the Optimas Award for General Excellence from Workforce Management Magazine in the US.
On receiving the award, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead said it recognised the "great work" of both HR and non-HR personnel. “It has been a way for us to look at ourselves, to assess ourselves, and to look at how we can become better at what we do.”
He added that winning such a prestigious award would only strengthen the Navy’s commitment to being one of the nation’s best employers.
“There are more things we can do, there are more things we will do, and there are more things that together we are going to make the US Navy an even better place to be, to serve and be a better service for our nation,” Roughead said. “[The Optimas Award] is a milepost because we don’t intend to stop here.”
Todd Johnson, publisher of Workforce Management Magazine, pointed out that the Navy was the largest organisation to win the award but explained that to win; an employer must show measurable impact for the organisation. Previous recipients have included companies known for innovation like Google, Intel, and Hewlett-Packard.
